On this day in 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Eleven inches tall, with a waterfall of blond hair, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her husband in 1945. When women are required to fit into tightly defined feminine roles in order to be accepted, those who are willing to act as expected often end up in opposition to those who aren’t. A new curated platform has been launched for family members, transgender and non-binary people and professionals of all kinds to learn and share about the gender spectrum and help society grow towards acceptance and diversity inclusion.   The platform includes many resources for parents and teachers, as well as for HR directors and other professionals on best practices for an LGBTQIA friendly environment.
